Ed:

Sounds like a "too good to pass up" offer for any AOL subscriber interested in trying high speed access. A&T/ATHM are clearly counting on six months being long enough to get the AOL subscriber hooked to the point they'll just give up on AOL when the trial period is over. I wouldn't give up my cable connection now, would you? Question is, how many AOL subscribers will take them up on this offer, given the extra cost?

However, it seems to me that this move by AT&T/TCI/ATHM plays right into AOL's open access arguments. Here's AT&T/TCI/ATHM going after AOL customers in a major service area, but AOL can't come up with a competing offer to its customers because ATHM has exclusive access to the cable network which is monopolized by AT&T/TCI. I think AT&T should have waited until they had the open access battle won before making this kind of move. Greed may be their downfall!
