I'm not a techie either, but, MCOM has gone from $10 to over $40 in the last few weeks...I've been watching this sector closely. I'm waiting for an answer to your question as I'm trying to understand the systems also. DB

Does the recent announcement by Metricom have implications for WaveRider?

Metricom has been marketing mobile data networking through its 28 kbps Ricochet product. Monday's announcement calls for the development of a 128 kbps product targeted for delivery by the middle of next year that will be aimed at the same group of mobile professionals on a national scale.

From our perspective, this announcement reaffirms WaveRider's wireless data communications strategy. This joint strategy by major companies such as Metricom, MCI and Vulcan supports our view that the wireless Internet connectivity market will grow very rapidly over the next several years - to multi-billion dollar levels.

We have previously contended that there are numerous alternatives for Internet access and that there is room for many competitors within each of these alternatives. In this case there are several important differences between Metricom's strategy and our own:

While there is some overlap with WaveRider, Metricom's primary market is the mobile business professional whereas ours is aimed at fixed wireless business and residential applications.
Metricom will likely require dense urban markets to support its infrastructure while WaveRider's Wireless Internet Networking (WIN) can be deployed cost effectively in both urban and rural markets.
At this stage, Metricom's suburban strategy appears to be aimed at the US market. Our sales and marketing efforts are aimed at international markets as well as North America.
Metricom's approach is to build, install and manage the whole infrastructure required for deployment themselves whereas WaveRider will market through partners and directly to carriers with existing infrastructure.
In terms of bandwidth, we expect to offer substantially faster throughput, and hence substantially more flexibility in terms of applications.
In summary, the Metricom announcement is a tremendous affirmation of this market sector and points to rapid market development of wireless internet access networks.
