FYO - Re: "I take it the 'competition' in the case of Merced is Sun, Alpha, IBM and maybe SGI?"

Excellent Point.

In 1997 SUN made a big splash with their announcement of their Ultra Sparc III due in mid 1998.

Have you seen an UltraSparc III lately?

The Media Press gave them a free pass on a one year slip - now going in to its second year.

Alpha 21264 was due in 1997 - it limped out in late 1998 - a 50 MHz part instead of a 600 MHz part !

IBM - they now have 0.18 micron, 6 or 7 layer copper PowerPCs cranked all the way up to....450 MHz !
