It really doesn't matter 3com FIFTEEN times higher than it was in 1991. 3COM did nothing for the past 3 BULL years. The networking industry is different than 10 years ago, you have multiple 10Billion+ companies running at you. Not to mention the upcoming startup. Eric probably is not up to the task. Eric is very confused about what 3COM wants to do and he did not execute well. (1) Want to dominate in the low growth, low margin Edge market. If so, then 3COM should make itself of the lowest cost manufacture. 3COM is certainly not. One way to make it low cost is to increase hardware components volume, where 3COM has different divisions that do not talk to each other, it has different hardware for similar products. (2) Running away from Cisco strategy for the past 3-year - Cisco is getting Bigger relative to flat 3COM. It did not work and will never be. 3COM just has to compete. Cisco's execution is good, but not great. But 3COM's execution is poor. John Chamber put a head fake, it makes Eric running left and right. (3) Did not foresee and cut the expense of Modem and NIC divisions. These divisions are still too big. 3COM is moving so slow. (4) Not aggressive in System division. From a smaller revenue base, 3COM should grow quicker than Cisco. Look at Extreme and Juniper's growth rate. Extreme is growing more than 50% every 3-month. 3COM's target is to have annual growth in the low 10s. (5) Lazy culture needs to change. Cisco might not be great, but John Chamber pushes employees hard. Cisco makes employees sweat. 3COM is too relaxing. Most 3COM employees still not realize how bad it is. Many told me life is good at 3COM, 3COM does not have too big a problem, 3COM mistake is bought USRX. NIC poor performance, poor product developments such as CB9K are certainly not USRX's fault. I could argue, the only bright spot - Palm is from USRX. If Palm were a separate company, its valuation could be more than 3COM market cap.
