You can only feel hurt by someone's words if a) you inwardly believe them to be true about you or, b) you respect the person saying it.

I know you don't believe what Jim says... so I am truly amazed that you respect him so much!

As everybody knows, the old "sticks and stones can break my bones but names will never hurt me" saying is bunch of baloney.
