Gary - <why can't soccer take off as a popular
sport in USA ? I believe it is the most popular one around the
world except NA.>

Lots of people play it. I'm kind of old, but I played organized soccer as a kid, and now my daughter does. I even saw the championship NASL game in ~78 here in Portland, when Pele' played for the New York Cosmos. They used to call Portland in those days, "Soccer Town USA".

The term "soccer mom" is NA.

IMHO, people in NA have a hard time watching it on TV, even at the professional level, thus no big advertising $ for the sport, with the current US ladies being an exception (because they win).

People love to win. Maybe the US ladies will create another spark, and you may be able to watch some more matches on Network TV.

Seriously, I hear you. Hopefully some of the mania over women's soccer can rub off on men's soccer as well.

Talking about soccer, why can't soccer take off as a popular
sport in USA ?

Number one reason: 0-0

People don't want to go to game and see a tie, let alone a scoreless one. (Don't ask me about hockey.) If I'm not mistaken college football rules were recently changed to implement overtime to help eliminate ties.

Also, the only game that a low score is appreciated (aside from golf) is baseball, which we all know is just an excuse to drink beer anyway. :-)

I agree. It's nice to see soccer gain some visibility. Maybe with time it'll get more popular in NA.

i'll take a stab. The schedules of the 4 established sports (baseball, football, basketball, hockey) overlap each other over the course of the year. That, along with their entrenched deals for broadcasting games with the TV networks and soccer will find it very difficult to get any air time.

if you can't see the sport on TV, you can't generate very much interest.

but ironically, because of the Women's World Cup, women's soccer might just jump. There's a new demographic for the networks to go after...young girls who watch games with their soccer dads. A chance for some bonding and spending. I'm sure the networks would love to get this group.

All JMHO, of course.

The game can not be stopped for ads. Rv won't carry games on a regular basis.

Look at hockey. A game that is not on TV lasts 2:45 to 3:00 But a game on TV lasts 20 to 45 minutes longer.

Cheers.
Chris.

Gary - Re: "Talking about soccer, why can't soccer take off as a popular sport in USA ? "

1. It wasn't invented in the U.S.

2. Most popular US Sports have repeated periods of inactivity in which spectators can discuss what's going on, day dream, and getting something to eat or drink. Soccer has virtually none of this except the break between first and second periods.

These periods of inactivity work well with TV broadcasting commercials. And without major TV coverage, most sports are dead.

3. The U.S. has many, many years of other major sports already ingrained in our culture - Baseball, Football, Basketball, Golf, and Ice Hockey.
