I have not read The Last Hurrah, but am interested in checking it out. My Irish Catholic father was raised in Hartford at the height of the old Bailey machine's power. His father worked for Bailey and at least half of the old neighborhood had some connection to the machine. I love hearing my dad and aunts and uncles tell stories about how things were in those days. It seems there was this hierarchy of loyalty. 1. Irish people 2. Democrats (which I guess was synonymous with Irish people.) 3. The Church. They would rather have prayed with a Protestant than vote Republican.

When I was 17 my dad got me into a union and if we wanted to get sent on good jobs it was expected that we volunteer our time at election time. The business agent of the local was a pal of my dad's and an old Bailey-type pol. Working for him was a lot of fun and very instructive. It beat the heck out of any poly sci class.

I think now the Bailey machine is but a shadow of its former self. I think Barbara Kennelly may have been the last pol to come out of it, and I believe she has now retired. There are remnants on the local level but they will soon be gone.
