I believe it's usually un-neutered males responsible for that. And they ID their owners as irresponsible. Those claws run around giving other polite kitties infections and fevers and deaths.

Survival rate among un-neutered males is lower for the same reasons; they fight and die. Stumpy never leaves the yard, and the most confrontational he gets is swearing.

Kitties don't like to have their territory invaded aggressively. They're then forced into confrontation they'd rather avoid. Neutered males don't usually roam much. They may travel, but they're not out to take on the dominant male, just for "some" pussy.
