Ed, <OT> thanks for the info. I'm a big GNET fan as well, and anything with cable/modem is always of interest. Hope your weekend was good? Jb

Ed:

You sure can dig these interesting and important snippets of info out of the mountains of published stuff. I have real time E-Mail feed from Quote.com on all of the stocks and industries I am interested in, but I still find that the SI threads are the best place to browse for the important and up-to-date info.

Seems to me that this report is at odds with the news article you posted yesterday about the ATHM/TCI/AT&T offer to the 400,000 AOL subscribers in the Bay area to pay their AOL fees for six months if they sign up for AT&T/TCI/ATHM cable internet service. I wonder how many people will go for this deal only to be told "not yet", or "not as fast or reliable as we promised"?

It also seems to me a bit odd that AT&T would shell out so much for TCI's cable system, and are only now finding out through "preliminary inspections" what that system is comprised of - sounds like up to 50% of the TCI Bay area network is still antiquated cable and in need of big $$ and time before viable cable modem service can be offered. Where the heck was AT&T's DD before they bought TCI?

The Cablevision techies here tell me that they decided from the beginning that their cable modem service roll out would only be viable if they first upgraded to 2-way fiber optic cable on the pole, and maybe that's why my service has been so reliable and not capacity restricted like much of ATHM's service apparently is.

In any event, the threat to AOL's 400,000 Bay area subscriber base from TCI/AT&T/ATHM may not be as great as it first seemed.
