How about people who use the plugins @guard or intermute? I'm using the former, and I rarely even SEE a banner ad, much less click on one. The websites load faster, too.

That is a nice first hand experience and it follows the preconception of what many people think. But the hard facts are tabulated from how much business is generated from how much is spent. The Internet also provides very useful ways of tracking the response and sales rates. I think there is considerable benefit to targeted advertising but only so much can be "pushed" onto the consumer before it reaches a level of absorption. The net has a long way to evolve but some level of absorption probably already hits users after they are "experienced" by some number of hours of usage (that is probably the subject of some graduate study research papers). The volume of advertising about the web is increasing at an accelerated pace - it must be growing at least as fast as the Internet. I don't know about others, but my reaction to web ads varies from amusement to irritation from seeing them so darn often. OK,, we know the web is out there and is great, enough already!
