Why is it when you get a bunch of (supposedly) intellectually educated people together they start talking to eachother like a bunch of 4th graders?

My son is going into 4th grade, and I can't imagine him keeping up this sort of thing for anywhere nearly this long, let alone resorting to this level of name-calling. My 3-year-old daughter, in a particularly cranky mood, might. But her moods don't usually last more that an hour or so.
