July 12 - Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. announces release of its 256 Mb
double data rate (DDR) SDRAMs. Hitachi claims that its new 133 MHz DDR
SDRAM when used on a 64 bit bus will provide 2.1 GByte/s peak bandwidth.
A Hitachi spokesperson stated the new DDR SDRAMs are produced with the same
manufacturing process as 133-MHz SDRAMs, and can be tested with the same low-cost
test systems.
<This is contrary to Rambus D-DRAM, which is very expensive to produce and which has
a peek bandwidth of 1.6 GByte/s.>
