Al Gore invented algorithms too, and named them after himself. In grade school, Al Gore simultaneously invented mathematical modeling and rock and roll when he formed a math-based rock group called the Algorithms. Seriously, Al was one of the original sponsors of the ARPANET in Congress and was instrumental in getting the money appropriated to turn it into a reality. Truth be told, he was light years ahead of Bill Gates and Microsoft in recognizing the potential for the Internet. I'd say he certainly deserves some bragging rights. Detractors are just taking cheap shots. As to your comment that you would rather trust Microsoft (for a Microsoft version of LINUX) than "some free source scrub", you must have a higher tolerance for computer crashes and planned obsolescence than I have. Personally, I stopped trusting Microsoft when I discovered that the most common crash-causing Windows 3.1 fault was not even documented in Windows manuals. In my experience, Windows 95 crashes just as often as Windows 3.1 ever did. The big difference between LINUX and Microsoft operating systems is that LINUX was developed by technical people who wanted an elegant, UNIX-like OS that would run large networks (mostly at universities) in a reliable and stable fashion, without the need to pay exorbitant licensing fees every year to Microsoft, HP, DEC, or whomever. Microsoft operating systems and office suites, on the other hand, are designed above all to generate revenue, foster dependency on the latest Microsoft software, and squelch competitors. LINUX is about freedom, Microsoft is about domination.
