As a general rule as a day trader you should not buy or sell in the first 15 min of the day. Let the stock establish a direction then take a position.

But back to my earlier comment. MM will go long or short throughout the day, but rarely they like to hold inventory overnight. GSCO and MLCO for example have built in order flow. From Mutual funds(in house), pension funds, asset management accounts, but the MM division will not hold inventory. The people who exucute this function are compensated nicely on making the spread. They are Trained not to go long or short in a big way (more than a few thousand shares) it puts in Jeopardy their pay plan. They make a very nice living just making the spread.
