Off Topic - Re: Infra Red Systems

Curtis, my IP mentor! Where have you been?

Infra Red shots are quite attractive to college campus folks due to their relatively inexpensive sticker numbers and the relative ease with which they are installed in comparison to the costs and drudgery associated with digging new trenches. In a sprawling, controlled campus environment they actually work our rather well, since distances are often insignificant, and obstructions are not likely to be a factor if they are mounted properly. Also, criticality is not as high on campuses as they are in business.

Although, I've had some successful experiences with IR transmission while consulting to several larger securities firms in the Wall Street District (GS&Co, for one) supporting some highly critical treasury applications between multiple buildings over encrypted hyperchannel links which were running at T1 speeds, a while back. Those systems have since been removed, in case anyone was wondering.

More recently I had a hand in recommending and overseeing the install of an OC-3 link while doing some pro bono at one of the City University campuses here in NY. Worked out very well, although they had to drop back to Fast Ethernet speeds of 100 Mb/s due to the higher costs associated with the ATM 155 gear. I thought that you would get a chuckle out of that last statement. You owe me one. -g-
