I would say that emotion IS a clear part of the response? My children certainly know when I'm angry, but they also can see a response that is either irrational and immediate- a slap, say- or one that is constructive. Maybe you hit it on the head with the word "reflexive". One of the most valuable things we learned to do as parents was to say- Go to your room and we'll be up to talk about it. And I think you're right about not trying to figure out who started it-- that's a losing battle.
