<EIR is the only telecommunications company currently allowed to operate in Ireland. >

Not so - an extract from the ESAT Telecom publicity material:

"Esat Telecom offers a complete range of voice and data communications products and services to Irish Businesses. If you make long-distance national or international calls, operate a virtual private network or maintain leased lines you could be getting a better service and saving money now by switching to Esat Telecom. If you need access to the Internet, want to connect your computer networks together or require other high-bandwidth connections, we can provide you with the right solution. You will find all of our products and services explained here, for more information call us on Freephone 1800 799 799 now."

Others are on the horizon, such as Ocean which is a joint venture between BT and the ESB, the Irish state electricity utility (soon also to be privatised if rumour is true).
