I agree with you completely. For me the turning point for men's sports was when the US basketball team players at the olympics refused to take a team photo because it was sponsored by Reebok, and there were "4 million reasons" not to do it, according to a Nike contract. This after baseball has been unable to get their act together with the players v owners (my arguement is that they should be able to work out some kind of a deal, striking is not acceptable), and totally excessive deals by state and local govts to get some of these teams on board, resulting in giant windfalls for the owners. Pretty much all men's team sports out here are double what the ticket prices should be or more - I'm fed up. Anyway I agree that there aren't many women's team sports that can support a league and as you say some of the current support is coming from a backlash against the men's teams which is temporary. Having said that, there really isn't too much of a correlation between a professional league and whether some victory in the world cup or olympics is relevant. I mean, there is no professional skating league and yet all these skaters out here are still celebrities after how many years? I'm talking about Kristy Yamaguchi, Brian Boitano, Debby Thomas, they are all local. Soccer is actually better off than some team sports, like say water polo, because you have the olympics and the world cup to strive for and the US men really don't have much hope for the mens world cup so the women's soccer team will shine for a while. BTW on the other threads where I was discussing this with people (men) the general consensus for them is that Mia Hamm was going to really clean up on the endorsements big time as well as Chastain, so the only people that I encountered with a lukewarm response to this victory reside on this thread. I'm not at all surprised by this, I think these guys are a bunch of fossils, but they are NOT the majority opinion (thank god).
