I disagree with your example, because the reality of physics is not determined by popular thought. The Wright brothers had their data and experiments to lead them to believe that they were quite reality based. Indeed they may have hoped, but they also realized the correctness of their thinking. (Here is their discussion of their experiments, for instance: wam.umd.edu ) With the level of detail that they pursued, I doubt they would be convinced today on the basis of the flimsy projections on the website to strap themselves into the PABN/PRWT trading machine.
