Well, imo you knew where he stood then. Today is another matter entirely.

For example, you just can't impose Christianity on everybody today, in the 60s we had a homogeneous society, not today. Same thing with the other republican "values" positions. They only work in the past in my view.

Interesting I saw an article where Tom Cruise was commenting on these matters - I guess everyone knows he and Nicole are scientologists - obviously he is pretty opposed to the republican platform, he made some interesting points too. I'll try to find the article online... imagine if your kid went to a public school and had to see the Scientologist commandments every day... how would you feel about that? Tom Cruise is a model citizen, is he not? A real achiever and family man, etc.
