I just mean red for like messages and when the dow is down. I too would dump all the browns, golds and go with all blues and greys.

Ahh. I agree. (Even though I most like the olive or gold, but recognize it's a hopeless cause.)

I agree. Simple is better.

I'm thinking the colors of a Web page are like picking out a good tie. Brown ties are not recommended by experts.

Using blue and grey as a background shade base allows the small amounts of red and green color (for stock quotes, Inbox count) to stand out on the page. The key is that bright colors such as red are used in very small amounts... not as shading, but on letters and numbers.

The blue/grey background also allows the message to remain the focal point of the page while at the same time the inbox count in red is not distracting. The use of additional colors such as brown lines and brown shading I would think add clutter to the page at this point.

Shades of grey instead of shades of brown would be better and more "tech" looking.

Interestingly enough, the color of the element "Silicon" is bluish grey, so we are winding up with a color combination that fits with the name of the site, Silicon Investor.
