Single Athlon FASTER than DUAL PIII
in Quake 3, that is.

firingsquad.com

Gamers don't make up a BIG part of the overall market at all, but these kind of computer buyers have been the MOST loyal to Intel simply because Intel's chips have had the strongest FPU on the market. But guess who is about to come to town? Enter the AMD Athlon. CI-have-a-slow-FPUmine won't have ANYTHING on the Athlon in this market unless Intel has messed with its core and enhanced its FPU. The K6-3's on chip cache didn't do much for FPU, so Cu's more than likely won't either. Yes, Quake 3 will be SSE enhanced, but it will also be 3D Now! enhanced.

From the review -

"In these last 3 series of tests, the AMD Athlon 600 again places first, completely sweeping the suite of Q3Test benchmarks! No Intel configuration, single or dual, as beaten the Athlon yet, in any test CPU-intensive or fill-rate limited. These are incredible results, and it looks like the Athlon is certainly the processor to beat!"

"What do you think of the AMD Athlon 600?
Well, simply put, this thing just swept all of the Quake 3 benchmarks, and processor-specific optimizations haven't yet been implemented into the game! The Athlon is one fast mofo, and it looks like Intel's going to have to really push the MHz in their future processors in order to keep up."

"What's the bottom line? Well, if you're looking for ultimate performance, we think the Athlon might be the best choice (barring any disastrous compatibility problems) once released, especially once some high-quality 3rd party motherboards are available"

Get used to these kinds of comments.

There are going to be a LOT of them in the coming year!

Thanks for the response on testing and testers, something I wasn't that aware of before, but a good reality check.
