H2SteveO, I said "fuel cells won't catch on fast if they need a pure hydrogen fuel source" - the key word there was FAST. Plug Power wants to start mass-producing home fuel cells in 2001. There is no way there's going to be a distribution system piping hydrogen directly into people's homes by then.

Furthermore, if fuel cells can do the conversion from standard fuel to hydrogen internally, what's the advantage of doing it at a central plant and then piping it out to people's homes? Okay, hydrogen can be produced from renewable energy sources, but if you want an environmentally friendly fuel why not use something more convenient like methanol or methane from biomass?
