Reseller, Good points. Renewed CPQ OEM sales coupled with a resolution to the chip shortage could very well result in sequential Zip unit sales growth going forward. In addition, while the number of Zips sold under license is hard to determine, I agree it is a factor to consider. Perhaps future cost reductions will not be quite as difficult as I previously suggested.

Still, cost reductions are critical if Iomega is to be successful with their Zip OEM strategy. Even taking into account the issues you brought up, I suspect it will be challenging to bring costs down fast enough to spark a jump in drive sales. Thanks for your comments.

Regards - Dale

A thread on the AOL board made an important point about the inherent difference between flash memory and !CLIK. Flash memory is a transfer device--when the device is full you have to transfer it to another device. !CLIK, on the other hand, can operate as a storage device. You can keep the information for as long as you want on !CLIK disks, replacing the full disk with an empty and inexpensive new disk. Iomega should be making this distinction very clear in their commercials and ads. They could feature, for example, a vacation trip where the Mr. Jones has filled his flash memory and cannot take more pictures while Mr.Smith reaches into his pocket for another !CLIK disk. The consumer can relate to carrying several roles of film on a trip and may not recognize that there is no counterpart for a digital camera based on flash memory

Reseller, has this mention of Iomega been posted? >>While a wide-ranging standard is not due until March 2000, a specification governing portable Internet music players, which also includes Creative Labs' forthcoming Nomad and future devices from Sony Electronics and Iomega, already has passed.<<
