Here is the URL for the Treasury Direct program - you can open up an account with the Feds and buy T-bills, bonds, or notes directly, without a brokerage fee, minimum purchase only $1,000. No maintenance fee unless the balance exceeds $100,000. I was thinking of doing that before, and that was when I decided that I couldn't transfer the securities into a retirement account - in fact, I asked a couple of brokers, who told me you had to buy the securities through your retirement account. You'd think that there would be a loophold for federal securities - I should learn more about this, maybe I could make some money off it.
