Restart in DOS Mode ...

Can we try an experiment?

First, copy your DOS shortcut to a folder where you don't mind a bit of temporary clutter. (Don't MOVE it, COPY it: Hold down Ctrl key)

Once you have this lab rat in its proper cage, right click it and select Properties. Click the Advanced button found under the Program tab.

Check the MS-DOS mode box. Don't change anything else here, but check the Close on Exit box once you're back on the Program tab.

Test this shortcut. It should put you into DOS mode just like Start/Shutdown/Restart in DOS does.

Please post your results so we can move forward.

Hope this helps, PW.

Bill,

I'm pretty sure the shortcut she's talking about is going to be in C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and it's called MS-DOS Prompt.

Just right-click it, select Properties, pick the Program tab and hit the Advanced button. Then check the MS-DOS mode button. Close that sheet and on your way out check the Close on exit button (which should be already checked anyway.)

Then, while you still have the folder open double-click the MS-DOS Prompt icon which will try to restart you in dos mode just like using the shutdown button on the start menu.

My guess is that you will still get the lock-up.

PW, have I said anything wrong? If he does get the lockup what's next?
