A little less than two years ago, I had the privilege of attending a conference at which she spoke, sponsored by the American Enterprise Institute and National Review. She is still quite a presence! Later in the day, many of us went over to an office building for members of the House, and had a party for her, leading up to the unveiling of a painting of her and Reagan on the portico of the White House. I was physically very close to her at several points, but so many people were jostling her, I did not want to contribute to the furor....

Perhaps she should be given more credit for this, but all of the progress came after some of her hard line measures were softened by her conservative successor, John Major, and a dialogue started. Whether this recent progress will be successful is very much in doubt. But it wasn't N. Ireland that cost her. It was the poll tax. (I was living in Britain at the time.)
