Gosh, Christopher, I was never even able to finish one novel by Trollope. "Barchester Towers," I think it was. Full of vicars and parsonages and fox-hunting, am I right? About as remote from my world and my concerns as the world and the concerns of Tolstoy were to you. (Tolstoy, by the way, was an admirer of Trollope.)

As I have said before, after a certain point, one's choice of favorite writers is a matter of taste. Actually, it would be more accurate to say it reflects one's temperament. I always liked stuff that had a lot of Sturm und Drang in it. Not much of that in a Victorian vicarage. Or was there?

Anyway, I'll give old Trollope a second chance. It's been many, many moons since I tried to read him. Maybe I would feel differently now.
