re: conversation trees

I also believe the intent of an SI subject is to provide a forum for immediate give and take so the current read-every-post style of use is important to sustain this.

Agreed. I think we have to be careful not to upset this apple cart.

I guess I think of a tree function as a more sophisticated version of the "View Replies" button. -- you get a snapshot of the sub-thread within the overall subject.

I think this would be a very valuable feature to catch up with a conversation THIS WEEK not a month down the road.
I'm wondering if it would help in finding the starting post of a conversation.

Ok..my delayed concept may not be so good.

I wonder if it could be 'misused' ie would we end up with a bunch of sub threads inside a thread to the exclusion of the primary thread..just a thought. Would there be complaints about posters not posting to the proper sub thread?

A thread is linear and trying to sub divide it in real time would most likely have an affect..I guess the question is would it have a negative affect..in addition to the stated advantages?

Perhaps this has been discussed earlier, but trees are problematic for both the old and the new SI. The main problem is that there is no way in either to start a clear "new subject". We start one by either "responding" to the last message, "responding" to our last message, or "responding" to message #1.

I think I just led myself into suggesting we need a way of starting a "new subject".

Best Regards,
Jim

P.S. "Subject" may be a bad choice in light of SI semantics, where Subject is used to refer to a thread. Maybe "New Topic" might be a better choice?
