I'm with you. I have nothing against being polite, and so on, but political correctness is anything but.

When I first started working with developmentally disabled adults we called them "clients." Then all of a sudden, this became a no-no. We were informed by the Dept of Rehabilitation that they were now "consumers" and that "client" was demeaning.

Here in California the developmentally disabled are provided cradle to grave services as an entitlement. So, anything concerning them is a big deal here.

They marched on Sacramento (actually they were taken there at the request of the legislature so they could express themselves). They hated being called consumers. They liked being referred to as clients -- it was comfortable and everyone used the term nicely anyway, never as an insult.

You and I might have a discussion about the terms "Indian" and "Native American" and if we did I would respect what you have to say on the subject and how you prefer being referred to, whatever that is. But someone who is neither has to say about how I address you or refer to your people.

BTW, My ancestry is a blend of several different strands of Northern European. I'm also a Native American, having been born here. IMHO all of our ancestors migrated here if you go back far enough. And if you are born here that makes you a native.
