MSFT knows great software ...

they use Apache and UNIX.

From linuxmall.com

Apparently, Microsoft is using Apache to run one of MSN's sites - if you go to this link

homepages.msn.com

or follow the instructions on LinuxCare's site you'll find that they're using Apache 1.3.6 on some flavor of UNIX. Ed. It has to be the stability and performance that Apache offers, surely they don't charge themselves for their own licenses... (July 15, 1999)

Verifying Apache/UNIX at MSN

You can directly query the Apache server at MSN using nc(netcat) or, alternatively, you can telnet to port 80 at homepages.msn.com. See the sample session below.

@bassano [~] $ nc homepages.msn.com 80
HEAD / HTTP/1.0
Host: homepages.msn.com

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 18:18:54 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.6 (Unix)
Set-Cookie: tcid=TC-378CD495-N-N4zUjsCoASwAAA26Px4;
expires=Thursday,
13-Jul-00 18:19:01 GMT; path=/; domain=.msn.com
Connection: close
Content-Type: text/html

What this means:
"nc" is a program, netcat, that enables you to create network connections. Here, we create a socket to homepages.msn.com, on port 80, the port usually associated with the web. We give it two strings, "HEAD / HTTP/1.0", and "Host: homepages.msn.com", and in turn, it gives us some information about itself, most notably, the fact that the server is Apache 1.3.6, running, presumably, on some flavor of Unix.

That the server is running Apache is also easily ascertained by going to an invalid page at

homepages.msn.com. The server returns the error message:

Not Found
The requested URL /invalid_url was not found on this server.

Apache/1.3.6 Server at homepages.msn.com Port 489

Umm, no. You probably haven't gotten the news yet over there on the Wintel threads but, as it turns out, this 'network' thing is ending up as a MUCH bigger deal than the old 'end user licensed / self administrating KB Toy desktop PC' schtick.

I guess sys admin should be a painful experience then , just like it is under UNIX currently ... in other words let's perpetuate the broken metaphor of config file hacking and command line interfaces.

Networks require qualified masochists to run them. The rest of the world beyond the small percentage which is the PC 'sell through', for whatever reason, would prefer their connected network device to be as easy to own and operate as their automobile (yet alone their telephone).

p.s. The PC accounts for upwards of 80% of the worlds computers; not a small percentage. Things are supposed to get simpler not more complex ... at least in a world where things advance rather than stagnate; that's the problem with UNIX. Isn't Jini supposed to let you plug and play devices into the network ?
