Really? Certainly not in this conversation, and I hadn't noticed it before. I read Borges over and over again, possibly because the stories are of a length that my average reading session can accommodate, but largely because I've never found anyone who can make me think - and feel - so much in such a small space. A fascinating combination of an entirely European education and linguistic discipline with a fire and imagination that are altogether Latin American. I think his stories the equal of any ever written anywhere, and I've always wondered that he didn't get more attention. A bit of his work would surely liven up some of the leaden anthologies of "great stories" that litter the marked down please-take-it-away shelves in bookstores.

If Borges had written The Name of the Rose it would have been 12 pages long, and it would have been a better story.
