Crash No! Bear Market Yes!

This mania has had significant corections in 1996, 1997, 1998. All started in the summer/fall time span, and all were quite brief. 10% drops in 1996 and 1997; 20% drop in 1998. None lasted more than 2 months.

We could be headed for a rereun, but I doubt. The US economic cycle is far more advanced today and inflation is poised to pick up markedly next year. Plus the uncertainties of Y2K.

I suspect we are in the early phase of a bear market that will last until the end of the year and perhaps into early 2000. Very few of today's new era investors can conceive of the stock market going down for more than a very brief period. As their confidence in the infallibility of the establishment is shaken and Y2K fears mount some may even turn to gold and gold stocks -- hard as that is to imagine at this time.
