I think there will be no drive to send manned flights to other planets without an intention to colonize. Pure science is nice for scientists, but someone has to foot the bill, unless it pays for itself, in which case it's not pure science, is it?

We have analyzed moon rocks and Mars rocks, and there's nothing there, on the surface, at least, that would pay for the effort. If anyone can figure out a way for orbiting manned stations to pay for themselves, then we'll build them, but right now satellites do everything we can think of.

Remember, Columbus and Magellan were looking for faster, better trade routes to Asia, and maybe new places to trade with. They did find the latter. If gold, diamonds or platinum were easy to find on the moon or Mars, we'd be there. Or oil.;^)
