I always cry when hearing animal stories, and I am crying now. I love them all so, even rescue earthworms from drying out on the sidewalk. Dogs, especially, are so noble, unselfish and loving. I cannot stand cruelty of any kind, so I hope no one mentions any here - am a chicken when it comes to that. All God's creatures are here for a purpose, and I believe they go to heaven.

Since we're on the subject of dogs, thought I'd share a typical afternoon with Lava.
Yesterday I took her to the park, and having just obtained the necessary "off-leash permit", I decided to let her run. Took her off the leash and she immediately began to chase swallows. You know, the birds that fly about 6 inches off of the ground looking for bugs for dinner. Lava locked on to this one swallow in particular and gave chase for a good quarter mile (these birds fly in large circular patterns). I could tell the swallow was playing with her because it always remained about 20 feet in front of Lava (it could have easily got away). She did this for awhile, and then seeing the girls playing soccer in the west end of the park, decided she would join in. In typical Labrador fashion, she knocked-over 2 girls and slobbered all over the ball. I finally caught up with her and got her back on leash.
I decided then to let her swim (and I can't keep her OUT of the water), so took her retrieving dummy over to the pond, let her off the leash, and got ready to throw it into the pond. Before I even let go of the dummy, she was swimming after a group of 4 ducks that were paddling along (now frightened). I called Lava back to me, and distracted her with the dummy. Once I got her attention back, I threw the dummy into the pond for her, which she retrieved promptly. Did this for about 10 more throws, and noticed she was finally beginning to tire. We quit this game and began our walk home. I'm still trying to teach her to "heal", so alot of pulling is involved in any walk we take. We walked by a house that had the lawn sprinkler on...which she considered an "attack-worthy" object. After pulling her off of the sprinkler, I got her home, and fed her. 5 minutes after eating she was asleep (not on her back yesterday). That's a typical afternoon with Lava.
909's,
-Joe

Joan, Great post and yes I've asked the Ol' Yellow Dog who he is before. I think he is a Saint of sorts. Everybody loves him and he is the most mellow and wonderful dog I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

I've always thought that maybe we humans are fooling ourselves. Who says we are some sort of superior creatures? Why on the grand scale of things can't a dog be on a higher level than us? Man was the one who believed he was at at the center of the Universe for all these years, not dogs.

I'm not sure what they ARE but I do know this. They are loyal friends and they have died many times for us humans and knew damn well what was going on when they did die. That is what the War Dog Stamp is all about.

Maybe dogs are guides, Bishop with one look told me "things will be alright, God's plan." So maybe dogs can talk without words and send thoughts but we humans just miss it.

I do also know that the Ol' Yellow Dog and I have had many talks. I really do talk to him. Some times we go for hikes to the tops of mountains and when we are on top looking around we talk. Sometimes we are bored sitting in a duck blind and we talk. I've talked to him about stuff I'd never talk to a human about. He never makes a judgement, listens intently and licks me right in the face though trained not to do so, when he knows I need a doggy hug.

I'm not sure who dogs are, I just love them.
