Shawshank was very good, and I liked The Player a lot too. Unfortunately, I have not so far gotten to Swimming with Sharks, thanks for reminding me...On Altman, I liked Short Cuts, and seem to be one of the few people around who thought that Pret-a-Porter (Ready to Wear) was good. Both are superceded by Cookie's Fortune, which is quite extraordinary. Patricia Neal and Glenn Close both give the performances of their lives...Check out Mistress if you want to see a great flick about the low end of the film business. It is an "actors movie", everyone gets a chance: Robert Wald, Laurie Metcalf, Christopher Walken, Martin Landau, Robert DeNiro, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Danny Aiello, Eli Wallach--- it is full of fabulous people! It is about a producer trying to make a comeback, someone who made the mistake of telling off his bosses, and has been in a tailspin since. He pulls out a screenplay by a guy who was an up- and- coming auteur until a famous actor killed himself during shooting, after which he went into a tailspin. They have to find financing from unlikely sources, and everyone who wants to invest needs to put his girlfriend in the picture. You get the idea....
