Hold the Mayo--I don't put much faith in saying something is widely used or practiced worldwide or in a particular locality.
Astrology, soothsaying, tarot cards, palm reading, and a number of other practices are still followed in various areas of the world and sometimes by highly educated people. It doesn't confer validity on them.
Whether GUMM or any other remedy works should be determined by rigorous scientific testing. If zinc is effective against colds then it can be tested and proven.
The homeopathic compounds do have me very skeptical, some of the levels of dilution would mean I might get more zinc (as an example) by licking a galvanized pipe.

As an aside I saw an interview with an FDA official some years back and he spoke of how frustrating it was to deal with some of the claims being made for various herbs, minerals, and compounds. The companies would put nothing on the bottle but would send out huge volumes of flyers that the health food stores would set right beside the product. The flyers would claim panacea type results and base them on nonscientific studies or 'ancient' usage for a particular ailment.
