JXM,

I wasn't always "so sane" about Y2K.... (:P

But having the opportunity to meet or correspond with so many folks who have been involved in the issue, as well as having a wife heavily involved in IV&V work for a sizable gov't agency.

There are so many unknown factors lurking out there. Anyone who claims to know what will happen is just plain fooling themselves.

But imagining some of the most likely scenarios, emergency agencies should be able to cope if people just keep their heads screwed on straight and not panic.

But I found your comments about unused Y2K budgets being applied to upgrades very interesting. Given that previous to Y2K, the prevalent trend seemed to be that IT was always being patched together with various components and playing second fiddle to other corporate priorities, may be the benefit of Y2K will be that these kinds have the budgetary power and authority to get what they need, not just what they can afford.

There is a lot of controversy out there surrounding the petroleum industry, domestic and abroad. We certainly aren't going to settle it here on this thread... :0)

Btw, I see all this discussion going on about "martial law" being declared in the US and how various gov't agencies are preparing for it due to Y2K. (and I don't doubt that they are)

But I'd like folks to think about this for a moment. What they are really preparing for are the panick-stricken responses from individuals, whether or not that panic is justifiable.

They are worried about people LOOKING for a reason to go nuts or engage in disrupting social order or in looting, robberies, murder... etc. They are not concerned about the rest of us who mind our own business, don't break the law, and take care of ourselves.

And this scenario applies to whether the state of emergency is a result of Y2K, a hurricane, a tornado, a meteor falling outta the sky, an alien invasion.... etc... etc...etc.

In sum, let me give you all my "extremist" take on martial law. Those who are imprisoned or perforated will quite likely be the ones who deserve it. They will likely be those who are part of the problem, not part of the solution. The ones who take and seldom give. The ones who willfully choose to take what others have worked to accumulate.

I won't miss them, and likely neither will many of you.

But again, I don't think it will get to that point. Clinton does not want to go down in history as the guy who put the entire US under martial law.

Regards,

Ron
