Mr. Rosen seems to have missed that DELL has cherry-picked his best markets out from under him. DELL could care less about the first-time buyer who needs to have their hand held through the buying experience with their touchy-feely prerequisites. Let Compaq sell them the $600 PC, and then later, when they've gotten a handle on internet basics, they can come to www.dell.com and get a much better perspective than they got from the flunky nerd at Comp USA....

We don't want to play in that low margin segment. And, even if DELL has to sell some sub-$1000 units, at least it will sell them at a much, much lower fixed cost of sales.

I'm all for letting Compaq spend its money to educate future DELL customers.

As for the corporate market, if Rosen thinks that Compaq has any advantage whatsoever over DELL, he's an idiot. The house of cards is coming down quickly...
