Because it was so good at capturing the angst of both girls AND boys. Clueless was cute, but did not have the edge that (I think) Fast Times had.

Well, the best reason is because I liked it better...and well....Phoebe Cates at the pool was quite good<g>

For me, I like movies that I have some empathy with at least one of the characters. In Fast Times I had empathy with a number of characters. Clueless was about people that I don't understand, so the movie just didn't click with me. I did find it mildly amusing though.

Why is Fast Times better than Clueless?

4 words:

"..I know that dude..."

Fast Times was much better than Clueless. Maybe I'm biased because I grew up in the 80's, but the teen movies back then were much better than they are now. Fast times had so many classic lines and characters. It was the first time that the whole "Mall culture" was glorified. And Jeff Spicoli was the original surfer dude. It was more of a coming of age movie rather than a teen rebellion movie like The Breakfast Club. I think that more recent teen movies like Clueless and American Pie don't live up to the movies of the 80's.
