Joan lists an impressive phalanx of data supporting the idea that right-wing thought is heavily entrenched in the ownership of the press. But I notice one almost universal "liberal" defect in news reporting nowadays. That is a systematic campaign to demonize the gun. Whenever violence is reported - even stabbings locally - the TV icon for the upcoming story is a handgun in menacing relief.
Almost all the print and TV editors in this country are unimpressed with the Bill of Rights - excepting their self-interest in Article 1.

"Liberal" is in quotes because antigun sentiment is antiliberal imo. It is an abandonment of civil liberty, and that (championing the freedom of the citizen) is to me the heart of liberalism. (Demonizing the gun) is a way to advocate social control, and here is one place where the Mencken quite is very appropriate. The press as a whole is trying and succeeding in getting the reader (viewer) scared of guns, regardless who owns them or what they get used for. Big dishonesty, and I see a pattern, a motive.

Or they are pissing in the wind and they have done damn well to keep things from moving in an even more conservative direction than the population wanted. When you are fighting a flood, losing 10 houses may be a triumph if without your valiant efforts you would have lost 100.
