Watch for a SUNW announcement on and acquisition. A significant one to enhance the network business. (I believe it will be in the software business, I don't know for sure)

$1 billion would be a rather large acquisition for SUNW. Didn't SUNW do something similar (bond) 6 mos ago, or so? They're building up a war chest for *something, it would appear. Maybe they're just buying a couple of Silicon Valley parking lots. <g>

Was anyone else surprised by the Sun/AOL alliance being named i-Planet? I didn't even know that the i-Planet line was the meat of the partnership.

Here's a link to the i-Planet architecture whitepaper

Re: Bond offerings

SUNW has little need to issue debt to finance acquisitions. It's stock provides a more than sufficient currency for that purpose. The typical reason box companies issue bonds like this is to support leasing and financing activities for their customers. Essentially, if you want to buy or lease a SUNW box they'll be happy to loan you the money to do so rather than have you borrow from a bank. Unless the company specifies otherwise, I'd assume that was the purpose here.

Dear Aha: Yes, I saw the large bond offering. My initial thought was that they are likely locking up long term money on favorable rates probably for future financing of sales and whatnot. The negative to me is that they must feel interest rates are going to rise in the future which of course is not good for the general market. JDN
