I don't know what you mean by "has become" accepted usage. Not only does the OED accept it as a true blue verb, but their examples of its use as a verb go back to Shakespeare (multiple citations). Other cited writers include Richardson (in Pamela), Coleridge, and Carlyle. I would say that is pretty well established usage. It may be that some people with limited respect for traditional usages may have tried to eliminate the usage. <g> But if I have a choice of following Shakespeare, Coleridge, and Carlyle or Rogers and CobaltBlue, well, Shakespeare, he da man.
