Huh??!! Mary Joe was alone when she drove into the water. They had parked to make out and a police cruiser had come by and looked the car over, that scared them. Ted Kennedy had walked back to the party and let her drive on alone because they had become afraid of getting caught in the back seat. That's why it happened to look the way it did. He then had someone drive him into town. That's why he didn't know till hours later that she was missing. He went out and found the car in the water, tried to dive and find her and went back to his room. So then he tried to cover himself but got caught in inconsistencies. The truth that he was cheating on his wife would endanger his Senate seat, his marriage, and the Kennedy name (such as it was then). He couldn't change his story or he would publicly be a liar which would also have a bad affect on his political career, maybe his marriage, and the Kennedy name. The police knew the truth all along, but he was a Senator and married. It was a tragic accident and he wasn't there when it happened.
