The point of disagreement has to do with the degree of contrivance involved. I think that it is natural for people to try to personify the country through "royalty", real or ersatz, and for them to speculate on family curses and such. It takes a great deal of sophistication and discipline not to go overboard. In that sense, the media is merely following the proclivities of their customers, rather than creating the hysteria...
