If it cost you ten dollars to produce at shirt here and you sell it for 14. Labor wise in china that same shirt cost you 1.00 to produce you are still selling it for fourteen creating more profit for your company. this assumes transports costs are low.

The two dollars is negligible in comparison to the thirteen.

The results show on your companies profit statement the export shows up as export from china not as American product source produced in other nation.
The us dollar as longs as it maintains inner strength nation wise promotes this. Japan also outsourced to other Asian nations.
The problem in China is part populous which China is addressing however They might just end up having to many males and much to much aggressive behavior in another decade.

Jim, one thing for sure is that the US will not change its way to calculate its import and export figures, just as true that China will not change its way to calculate their figures either. After all, even if by China's calculation, China still has a big surplus, which is a big plus for the Chinese economy.

And China wants to spend a lot of it to buy some US technology, but the US says now all those technologies have potential military use. Instead, the US only wants to sell China agricultural products. But China is not a banana republic. It can be self-sufficient in terms of food by and large. So the real problem is that the buyer cannot get what he wants to buy, while the seller only wants to sell low value products. I think the current figure for the percent of technology import from the US to CHina is only around 18%.
