If the US wants to intervene should a military conflict arise because of the Taiwan-China dispute, that's a typical replica of the Vietnam war, or very possibly, worse than that. The worst scenario would be a limited nuclear war in the Pac-Rim region, with Taiwan blown up to pieces, South Korea over-run by the North. And Japan, which is totally dependent on foreign resources, is likely to suffer from a military blocade from China. Is it worth the US interest to provoke those desperados? If and when that happens, imagine what's gonna happen in Kosovo or the MidEast? Saddam and Milosevich can hardly wait for this to happen. And don't underestimate the military powers of China as someone suggested; they wouldn't steal the nuclear secrets and put them on the shelf.
