Don: you may be right..the stars and planets are not in line for the immediate recognition of RDRAM capabilities in all uses....but how much is needed to ultimately make the product and the company a huge success? I think a lot less than 100%

What about games? What about wanting really realistic looking multimedia? I don't just mean herky-jerky, sort-of-OK multimedia, but sensation that you can swim in. Something that changes the whole basis of having a computer --- it's not just a calculator/word-processor -- now it's a way of getting your mind blown. To many people, that's not frivolous. That's a core reason for buying and maintaining something as expensive as a computer -- at least in many peoples' minds. It could be for me -- if a computer could offer that. And maybe rambus technology makes that closer.

Don,

Re: I am preparing to buy a NEW Sony 500 Mhz P-III w/128 or more ram, 13 gig Hd and firewire interface to use for Multimedia purposes.. I can't see ANY reason to wait or even pay more to get Rambus ram in this machine, because I can't imagine how it might really benefit me now or in the coming years. When the applications come out that need 800-1000 mhz and Rambus ram that I absolutely NEED to have I will upgrade again, but I don't see it coming. Even a 500 mhz P-III is WAY beyond the needs of MOST users, including ME!

You are exactly the type of user we've been describing who buys the top end of the PC line even if they don't need (or not sure if the need) the power. You may not feel like waiting for RDRAM, but if you made the same decision to buy a top-of-the-line PC next year, then you wouldn't have had a choice. RDRAM would have automatically come in your machine as part of a high-performance PC package. RDRAM won't be an option you pick. If you pick a "performance" PC, RDRAM is going to be in it as part of the "large amount of memory, big & fast hard drive, fast processor, and fast interfaces" package.

And then, as RDRAM comes down the price curve (and I'll post a response to your other message shortly as to why I think this will happen) it'll just "appear" next in mid-range, and then lower and lower end PCs. When PCs are built with Timna, you won't have a choice.
