I think Affymetrix is leaving the database business to others, Incyte being a major player. Affymetrix is aiming at making its genechip the platform of choice for a lot of gene identification; although from what I've read it may not be suitable for high throughout analysis. It's still very early in the game for the DNA chip business, and while I'm very pleased with AFFX's performance to date I wouldn't put too much emphasis on its early lead. Industrial testing, such as at a meat packing facility testing for e-coli, could be a very profitable business and the AFFX chip might not be the platform of choice. My strategy is to play all the horses I can. This should be a very big industry and there may well be more than one success story. Patience will be a necessity.
