Room to grow at Cognos

$20M office planned

By KEVIN BELL, Business Editor, Ottawa Sun
Cognos Inc. said yesterday it will spend $20 million to construct
a new building to accommodate its rapidly growing staff.

The Ottawa company said the new 180,000-sq.-ft. complex will
be built next to its existing headquarters on Riverside Dr.

Cognos, which produces business intelligence software, has been
on a hiring binge in recent months as it attempts to keep ahead of
fast-growing competitors, primarily Business Objects SA of
France.

Donnie Moore, the company's senior vice-president of finance
and administration, said the Ottawa workforce has doubled in
size over the last three years, from 400 to 800.

When the new building is completed in late 2000, Cognos'
Riverside headquarters will be able to accommodate 1,300
employees.

It will also be able to accommodate the growing workforce for
several years to come, Moore said.

"We have been increasing our operations worldwide to capture
the opportunity taking form in the business intelligence
marketplace," he said.

Cognos has been contending with cramped quarters for several
years, leasing seven satellite offices, most in the Auriga Dr. and
Colonnade Rd. area. Once the new building is completed, most
of those offices will be closed and staff will move into the digs.
